New stars emerge in golf tourney
Kate Chadwick from Ngati Kahungunu proved too strong for her opposition at the National Maori Golf Championship, taking out her third matchplay title in five years.
The win on the Taupo course gives the 23-year-old Napier nurse direct entry into next year's New Zealand Women's Open.
Tokoroa 18-year-old Nathanial Cassidy is the new senior men's champion.
That wins him the right to go straight to the final-play-off for the New Zealand Open.
Sydney-based Teina Hotene won the men's strokeplay by nine shots but could not string together enough holes to stay in the matchplay contest.
Tournament director Aroha Tito says the influx of players from across the Tasman kept standards high, despite losing some top local golfers to the New Zealand Amateur tournament.
