Waiwhetu mentoring proves successful
Te Runanganui o Taranaki Whanui is crediting is unique mentoring approach for Maori students is playing a big part in achieving a 100 percent pass rate a group of pre-trade carpentry students in hosted.
The 16 students learned their skills by building a new health centre at Waiwhetu Marae in Lower Hutt, with tuition supplied by WelTec.
Runanga executive officer Teri Puketapu says they now have the basis for a great career in the building and construction industry.
He says mentoring provided through Tamaiti Whangai kept the students engaged and united in study throughout the year.
More than 120 students went through the Maori and Pasifika Trades Training initiative at WelTec this year.
