Maori population tops 700,000
Statistics New Zealand estimates the Maori population in New Zealand is now just shy of 700,000, a jump of 230,000 over the past two decades.
Latest data and estimates released this week shows a total Maori population of 692500 in 2013, compared to 468400 in 1991.
Over that time the median age has increased from 20.1 years to 23.7.
The number of Maori who are 60 years or over has gone from 19,400 to 58,100, and the number of 90 plus Maori from 160 to 440.
