Rough ride in tv game
Maori working in television expect more turbulence in the industry.
The biennial hui of industry umbrella group Nga Aho Whakaari last weekend grappled with issues such as the turmoil in Maori Television under new boss Paora Maxwell.
They also sought assurances from Television New Zealand boss Kevin Kendrick that independent Maori production houses would be first in line when the broadcaster outsources its Maori and Pasifika programmes.
Nga Aho Whakaari chair Kim Muriwai says even then, there are no guarantees that programmes like Marae and Waka Huia have a long life.
" There are also thoughts that this is actually an exercise in preparing TVNZ for sale. Thats another thing that we need to be aware of thats happening at a higher level, especially with the timing after the elections. People who are are aware of those issues do see that as a sign that TVNZ could be the next state entity thats sold off to a private concern " she says.
