Maori sports top of the world
Twentysix world champions are among the athletes contending for top honours at this month’s Maori sports awards.
Individual world champions include crossfit star Alannah Rihari, canoeist Lisa Carrington, powerlifter Sonia Manaena, pro figure skater Teneka Hyndman, and wood choppers Adam Tuwhitu Lowe and Jason Wynyard, who also make up a world-beating power sawing team.
There are also team champions in rowing, rafting, para-cycling, and women’s sevens rugby.
The team of the year award is between the Maori All Blacks, New Zealand Maori Women’s Kabaddi Team and NZ Maori Women’s Hockey Team.
League legend Stacey Jones has a chance of picking up the coach of the year title, as well as being inducted into the Maori Sports Hall of Fame alongside golfer Philip Tataurangi.
The awards will be presented at a black tie event at Auckland’s Vodafone Events Centre on November 29.
