Tuhoe trills get world remix
The bird songs of the late Tuhoe musical mastermind Hirini Melbourne have been given an international makeover.
Singer Dudley Benson has taken acapella recordings from his 2010 album Forest: Songs by Hirini Melbourne and given them to collaborators around the world to remix.
They include US sonic magicians Matmos, electronica icon Barbara Morgenstern from Berlin Juta Hasunuma from Japan and kiwi electronica pop enigma Stef Animal.
Dame Anne Salmond appears as guest narrator in Benson’s own remix of Kiwi.
Deforestation comes out on November 3 on Benson’s website dudleybenson.com as a digital download and limited edition vinyl with the cover by outsider artist Susan Te Kahurangi King.
All profits go to the Ulva Island Charitable Trust, for their conservation work on the bird sanctuary off Stewart Island.
