Aotearoa team lift waka ama silver
A team from Aotearoa has won silver in the largest long distance waka ama race in the world.
The Queen Lili’oukalani event off Hawai attracts more than 2500 paddlers from around the world each year.
The eight men and women from Auckland University’s Nga Tauira Maori team completed the 30 kilometre race in two hours 59 minutes, nine minutes behind the winners of the mixed class in a field of 122 teams.
Paddler Tai Stephens says it was challenging both physically and mentally to compete over that distance in 33 degree heat and 80 percent humidity.
