Hapu shares history with Pacific MPs
Parliamentarians from Polynesia, Melanesia and Micronesia are in Aotearoa to share issues of concern and get tips on the parliamentary process.
Former MP Shane Jones, New Zealand’s ambassador for Pacific development, says each country has adapted the Westminster or other western systems to their own needs.
He says a highlight of the trip was yesterday’s welcome from Ngati Whatua Orakei.
"They are fascinated to receive a briefing from Ngati Whatua of the history of colonialism up there and the power of renaissance. It's a great mixture of people in the party and ngati Whatua were buzzed out to have the chance to be the proxy for all of Maoridom as they were received into Tamaki Makaurau," Mr Jones says.
Depending on any consequences from the earthquake, the visiting MPs are due in Wellington on Thursday where they will hold a mock debate in parliament’s legislative chamber to they can get the feel of how the place works.
