Housing plan ready for government change
Green Party social housing spokesperson Marama Davidson says it’s possible to end homelessness within 10 years, but it will take a change of government to get started.
Ms Davidson is one of the authors of a cross-party report on homelessness, which started with a hearing at Auckland’s Te Puea Marae where homeless whanau had been helped through the winter.
She says the inquiry heard from the community about the extent of homelessness and the changes needed to stop it, starting with a Housing First approach.
"Put people in the whare and then wrap the social services around those people. Building more state homes, increasing and improving our state home stock, addressing the market, putting in place measures that would encourage more people to be able to access a house as a home and putting a curb on houses being able to be used as a business," Ms Davidson says.
