Willing learners priority for Te Matawai
The new chief executive of Maori language body Te Matawai says there won’t be one solution to increasing use of te reo Maori.
Te Atarangi Whiu comes to the job after experience as a programme manager and policy advisor in Te Puni Kokiri, the Ministry of Education and in the Beehive.
She says she’s impressed by the range of experience and skills around the table at the new body, and knows that every member carries the aspirations of the iwi and sector groups that nominated them.
She’s sure a diverse programme will emerge form their deliberations, as they consider what they are hearing from Maoridom.
"There isn’t one solution so the challenge is how do we have a strategy that takes into consideration the needs and aspirations of a group of people across the motu who ultimately want to or aspire to have some competency or fluency in their own language," Ms Whiu says.
