Glen Innes protest highlights privatisation agenda
Green MP Marama Davidson says she’s supporting embattled Glen Innes state housing tenant Niki Rauti because she is taking a stand against privatisation.
The 62-year-old has resisted efforts by the Tamaki Regeneration Company to move her from her Taniwha St home of 30 years, saying the alternatives she has been offered are unsuitable.
Ms Davidson blogged on the issue after sitting through Ms Rauti’s Tenancy Tribunal hearing.
She says the protest allows people to see through the rhetoric that the project is about regenerating a run down state house neighbourhood.
"Only 30 percent of the total land will be used to replace social housing. Seventy percent of that land is being sold off and developed for private homes and those homes are $1 million plus, out of reach of the local community, out of reach of most New Zealanders actually, certainly out of reach of the people who have made Glen Innes their community over several generations," Ms Davidson says.
