Public servants do the haka for whanau
The public service was out in force at Wellington’s Pipitea Marae on Saturday to show public servants can haka with the best.
Te Konohete is an annual event for the kapa haka roopu within the various government departments and agencies.
Education Ministry te ao Maori chief advisor Wayne Ngata says it wasn’t a competition, but the teams brought their A game.
"It is an opportunity for people to come together, not just Maori because there were as many non-Maori as there were Maori there and on stage as well, so it’s an opportunity to promote te reo Maori, an opportunity to promote tikanga Maori, to promote haka as the face of some of that, and to bring people together in a fun day, in a fun way, as members of the public service and as whanau," he says.
