Maori research chasing storms
Otago University will show off its Maori research in its biennial Hui Poutama, a two-day symposium starting tomorrow.
Dr Anne Marie Jackson says the theme this year is Titiro whakamuri kia anga whakamua – glimpsing into the past to shape how we should move into the future.
Topics range from Maori song composition to storm chasing to Maori water safety and swimming.
She says Maori research is evolving in response to calls for academics to respond to the needs of Maori communities.
"There’s been a huge amount of work from our senior Maori leaders as well as our senior leadership within the university to hit right on the importance of Maori educational outcomes but also how our Maori research and researchers can support and enhance the aspirations our whanau and communities have on the ground," Dr Jackson says.
Young researchers have been given the chance to distill the essence of their mahi into three minute theses, and for the first time there will be some te reo Maori only sessions.
