Davidson call for WINZ debt amnesty
Greens co-leader Marama Davidson says too many people are going into debt because they can’t cover basic costs.
That’s one of the issues she wants covered by the Welfare Expert Advisory Group, which is consulting on the future of the welfare system.
She says the Ministry of Social Development is contributing to the burden by imposing fees and interest on those who can least afford it.
"I'd actually like to see some of those debts just completely written off and stop further harming people who are aready struggling, particularly the overpayments due to WINZ muck ups. That is just simply unfair," Ms Davidson says.
The Green Party wants to see an increase in benefit rates and the end of punitive sanctions.
