Tauranga iwi challenged on settlement spin
The co-chair of Labour’s Māori caucus says he’s had enough of Tauranga iwi Ngāi Te Rangi’s attempts to drag Labour MPs into its protests against the Pare Hauraki settlement.
Willie Jackson says the iwi captured social media with its story that it was being wronged by the redress offered to Hauraki, and it has also attacked local MP Tamati Coffey.
He says it isn’t telling the whole story about how the trade offs it agreed to along the way to its own settlement.
"Look at yourselves, think about it before you sign a document, and think about it afterwards too when you start telling your people 'it's all the Labour Māori caucus's fault.' They can play martyr all they like or they could start being up front and telling how they negotiated for their people and signed off two, three times," Mr Jackson says.
