Giant manu form trans-ocean bond
A shared respect for giant eagles has brought two dance companies together.
In Aotearoa, it’s the extinct Hokioi or Haast’s Eagle, and in North America, it’s the Golden Eagle, or as it’s known to the Cherokee or Duyuktv people of North Carolina, the Vwōhali (pronounced A-wor-harley).
That was the link dancer and choreographer Taiaroa Royal of the Okareka Dance Company found to create a work with Missy and Andrew Hubbard of the Cincinnati-based Exhale Dance Tribe.
Hōkioi me te Vwōhali – From spirit eagles land premiered last night at the New Zealand Arts Festival in Wellington to a standing ovation.
Royal says it was a triumph not just for dance but for the human bonds it created, with the work creating a huge whānau or tribe to see it realised.
Hōkioi me te Vwōhali will be performed again tonight and tomorrow.
