The president of the New Zealand Medical Cannabis Council is welcoming the lowering of the proposed fees for entering the industry.
An information hui was held for potential growers and manufacturers in Gisborne this week.
Manu Caddie says the proposed fee, which will be used to cover some of the Health Ministry’s regulatory costs, dropped from about $30,000 to $8000 once the ministry realised there could be more than 100 cultivators.
He says that makes it one of the lowest entry points in the world.
“Larger cultivators will obviously be able to spread those costs across more plants and more production but it’s a big drop from what was planned so that’s appreciated and you can have one site with a number of growers all under the same licence so potentially whānau could share a site – obviously you’ve got to trust your whānau that everyone is going to stick to the rules,” Mr Caddie says.
