Big boost for Hāpai smoking research
Research aimed at closing the gap between Māori and non-Māori smoking rates has won almost $5 million from the Health Research Council.
Whakahā o Te Pā Harakeke is a five-year programme bringing together Otago University, Hāpai Te Hauora, Kōkiri Marae, Keriana Olsen Trust, and the Institute of Environmental Science and Research ESR.
Hāpai investigator Lizzie Strickett says it's a a significant opportunity to build Māori research capacity and to come up with research that will be meaningful for Māori communities.
She says leadership by those communities is critical to achieving the Aotearoa Smokefree 2025 goal.
The Health Research Council is also putting $5 million into Massey University's Tangata Whenua Tangata Ora programme investigating whenua initiatives that aim to produce health gains.
