Web stories light fire for ta ree Moriori
Five e-stories in a language which has not been spoken since the 19th century have been posted to the Education Ministry’s Kauwhata Reo site.
Kā Kakepunga Kōrero is a joint initiative with Hokotehi Moriori Trust, which has the long term aim of reviving the language of Rekohu-Chatham Islands.
Kakepunga, meaning a bundle of special sticks for lighting fires, was chosen as the name for a project to rekindle Moriori language and identity.
Three of the five stories focus on aspects of Moriori cultural origins, and to look at more recent history.
They have been voiced by interpreter, Kiwa Hammond, working with the creative team at Cognition Education.
