IA rides the waves for waka song
Māori music collective IA has teamed up with Te Toki Waka Hourua to create a video of them performing their new single Kōkōrangi aboard the waka Hinemoana on the open ocean.
The single is out today.
Band member Moetu Smith says combining sailing, filming and live performance was difficult, particularly when attempting to record wind instruments like kōauau and ponga ihu.
He says kōkōrangi means astronomer and the lyrics talk about how Pacific ancestors and today’s voyagers sailed across vast oceans guided by star systems and natural elements.
The video is available on IA’s Facebook and Youtube, and it will also feature in next week’s Te Hau Kōmaru waka hourua national festival in Tauranga.
