Iwi step up for conservation boards
Conservation Minister Eugenie Sage says new members will increase the diversity of opinion on conservation boards around Aotearoa.
The 21 reappointments and 26 new appointments bring the proportion of women members on conservation boards to 53 per cent while 38 per cent of board members identify as Māori.
Among the new members are Te Uri o Hau Settlement Trust senior kaitiaki Edward Ashby, who will sit on the Northland Conservation Board.
Ngāti Whātua nominated Mervyn Kerehoma to the Auckland board, and David Milner is Ngāti Rangi’s pick for the Tongariro Taupō board.
Bonita Bigham, the poutakawaenga of Te Korowai o Ngāruahine Trust, will sit on the Taranaki Whanganui board.
Ngāi Tahu nominated Michael McMillan, a cultural consultant with construction experience, to the Canterbury Aoraki Conservation Board and Dean Fraser, a Silver Fern Farms general manager and former Ōtākou Rūnanga chair, to the Otago board
