Morning quake wakes up call
A strong earthquake rocked Wellington and the lower North Island just before 8am this morning.
GNZ Science says the 5.8 magnitude quake was centred offshore about 30 kilometres northwest of Levin at a depth of 37 kilometres.
Waatea host Dale Husband was speaking to MP Kelvin Davis at the time, and he said it initially felt like the wind shaking his apartment.
The quake rattled food off shelves in shops around the region, and train services were suspended while tracks were checked, but there were no reports of significant damage.
