Māori army historian Dr. Monty Soutar believes that ANZAC Day presents an opportunity to honour Māori individuals who fulfilled their Treaty obligations through military service.

Tomorrow, we will commemorate all soldiers who served and lost their lives in wars, focusing on those at Gallipoli in 1915. Soutar says that the contributions of Māori soldiers symbolise unity, especially in the context of recent political actions that undermine Māori rights.

“I know it’s only a blip in our history, but I think in fact, the day is a good reminder to Māori about the sacrifices our people made for equality in this country,” says Soutar.

Waatea Digital will air the Whakaata Māori live broadcast of the ANZAC Day dawn service.
