Ruatāhuna-based Tūhoe Tuawhenua Trust is sharing the bounty of its land to raise funds for forest restoration.
Chair Brenda Tahi says this year’s Matariki Ahunga Nui initiative consists of hampers containing foods such as Ruatahuna pork, venison sausages, eels from the Rangitaiki River, fruit from their orchards, Maori potatoes, preserves and the trust’s award-winning Manawa Honey.
It’s designed to reflect the Matariki tradition of feasting.
“So we have foods from the ocean that reflects the star Waitā and then Waitī is reflected in our foods from freshwater and Tupuānuku is those things that come from the earth and Tupuārangi is from our forest or orchards,” Ms Tahi says.
Matariki Ahunga Nui hampers are available for delivery by June 28 for a koha of at least $350 – and Brenda Tahi says they’re worth every dollar.
