Kohanga hui addresses unfinished claim

A spokesperson for the Kohanga Reo National Trust says trustees are keen to step aside and let new faces carry the movement into the future.
Derek Fox says rather than clinging to their lifetime appointments, trustees at the embattled body are behind a push to develop new governance structures which are more democratic.
A hui at the weekend at Turangawaewae Marae over the weekend appointed a seven-member working group will consult with every kohanga in the country about governance models.
Mr Fox says the hui also called for the crown to stop interfering in the movement, and for the resumption of negotiations on remedies for Kohanga Reo’s Waitangi Tribunal claim.
"Two years ago the tribunal found that the crown had been under-funding kohanga reo and so the hui wants the crown to front up with the Kohanga Reo Trust and to resolve that issue of under-funding," he says.
There will be another national hui in December to consider the recommendations of the working group.
