Job figures spook southside
Manurewa MP Arena Williams says unemployment projections in the Budget are bad news for her constituents.
The Reserve Bank is picking unemployment to reach 5.3 percent by the end of the year.
Ms Williams says conditions are likely to be the worst since the 2009 global financial crisis.
She says rather than wipe its hands, the Government needs to heed the lessons of the pandemic.
“We came out stronger because we were investing in people. We had our marae, investing in our services. We had schools coming together to make things work for families. We had massive investment in our food banks to keep people going and we got through that. I think that speaks to the power of when you actually trust our community organizations in South Auckland to work with people on the ground you get a good result, you get a community which feels cohesive and feels like it’s getting places,” Ms Williams says
