Te reo Maori experts are concerned a rewrite of the law protecting Maori language doesn’t go far enough.
The experts met last week for a national summit at Hopuhopu.
Waikato Tainui executive chair Rahui Papa says while the bill sets up a new body, Te Matawai, to oversee the sector, it doesn’t have a broad enough view as to what the Maori Language Commission, broadcast funding agency Te Mangai Paho and Maori Television electoral college Te Putahi Paho can do.
He says the commission, Te Taura Whiri, could be given a function to review the effectiveness of spending on te reo Maori by other government departments like Education.
