No leftovers in Seymour sandwich plan
ACT leader David Seymour has come up with a no frills approach to school lunches.
The Associate Education Minister says he’s trimming $107 million a year from the healthy school lunches programme by stripping out exotic options like quinoa, couscous and hummus and getting contractors to bulk supply sandwiches and fruit at $3 a meal.
And forget about taking any left over kai home.
“The question is what’s the job of the Ministry Education and the budgeted money under the education vote in parliament. Is it to supply food that people subsequently take home for other purposes, I don’t think that is the role of education but I don’t think the education department should be focused on solving a nutrition problem across society,” Mr Seymour says.
He says the plan will significantly reduce food wastage.
