Whānau ora plan for Middlemore housing
Waipareira chief executive John Tamihere says the west Auckland trust is taking a different approach to its development next to Middlemore Hospital.
The joint venture with Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki Whenua backed by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development includes 124 living units for kaumātua and physically-challenged whānau aged 55 years and a large whānau ora/health and wellness centre.
.
Previous trust-built developments were handed over to their commissioning organisations, but in this case Waipareira has a bigger vision.
“We’re going to have a big say into who goes into those houses, the type of culture, that occurs on that campus. You build things, but you don’t populate them. So we’re taking a totally different approach,” Mr Tamihere says.
The housing units will become available next year and the wellness centre should be up by 2027.
