Job cuts right says PM
Prime Minister Christopher Luxon is unapologetic about the number of public service job cuts.
Yesterday the Ministry of Education announced 565 jobs are set to go at the Ministry of Education and another 447 at Oranga Tamariki.
That brings the total across the public sector to more than 3000, as departments make the cuts being demanded by Finance Minister Nicola Willis to pay for tax cuts.
Speaking from Bangkok on the second leg of his three country trade tour of South East Asia, Mr Luxon said it’s what people voted for.
“Some of those roles are vacancies and others will be real job losses that will be a tough time for those individuals impacted but New Zealanders expect us to make sure that every dollar is actually directed towards delivering an outcome so that’s why you can be confident as we go through the Budget there will be an increase in support and resources and funding for Oranga Tamariki and Education,” Mr Luxon says.
