Kirikiriroa diagnostic centre puts Māori to fore
Te Kōhao Health’s new $12 million wellness and diagnostic centre in east Hamilton was officially opened this morning by Kiingi Tuheitia.
Chief executive Lady Tureiti Moxon says it’s taken six years of hard work and fund raising to make the centre in Enderley a reality.
Te Kōhao teamed up with Pacific Radiology, Te Whatu Ora and Te Aka Whai Ora to bring a range of services to the community.
It’s a response to the five biggest killers of Māori – cardiovascular disease, breast cancer, cervical cancer, lung cancer and bowel cancer.
“The idea is we get our people in the front of the line instead of waiting until they are in crisis and end up in A&E and then they get all the x-rays and the diagnosis and the specialist treatment at that point and quite often for many of our people it’s too late,” Lady Moxon says.
She says the centre is an assertion of tino rangatiratanga.
