Minecraft building kura skills
A global computer game that’s been given a Te Ao Māori makeover is proving a game changer for kura students.
Minecraft, in which players use digital lego-like blocks to build anything from a house to a whole world, is played by 200 million people globally.
Heather Simonds from Ngā Kura ā iwi o Aotearoa says it’s taken kura kaupapa by storm since a Māori version was released in 2019.
She says at this week’s Aotearoa Minecraft teams competition was held in Rotorua, teams had to use every skill and resource they had.
“Such as communication skills, collaboration, bringing in their own creativity into the space and then nurtured to do that from a te ao Maori perspective, is really a great opportunity that we want to provide more of to more tamariki in our kura,” Ms Simmonds, says
The competition was won by Mangere’s Nga Tapuwae kura.
