Lee belatedly looks for media sector fix
Broadcasting Minister Melissa Lee says there’s no one answer to the woes afflicting the media in Aotearoa New Zealand.
Warner Bros Discovery yesterday confirmed its Newshub newsroom will shut by July with the losss of 300 jobs, and TVNZ is cutting up to 68 jobs across its network with Fair Go, the Sunday current affairs show and its Midday and Tonight news shows being cancelled.
Ms Lee says everyone in the sector needs to work together.
“I’ve been working through to try and actually talk to the sector since I became a minister and trying to find a solution and one of the ways I mention is the Broadcasting Act and looking at the sector in general and trying to find a solution to modernise and innovate and be sustainable going forward,” she says.
Minister Lee has come under fire from the industry for what’s seen as a lack of undertanding and leadership.
