A Palmerston North City Councillor has apologised for suggesting Māori women be sterilised to stop them smoking in front of their children.
Bruce Wilson made the comment at this week’s community wellbeing committee, which was discussing a proposal to make the central city including the Square smoke free.
Associate Health Minister and local MP Tariana Turia said the comments were "absolutely appalling", and community leaders should be prepared to put aside their prejudices.
