A bone carving symposium in Taranaki drew more than 60 artists keen to give impetus to the craft.
Carver Daniel Ormsby says the annual Firstgas Mōkau Bone Carving Symposium draws a good mix of experienced carvers, both Māori and Pākeha, as well as beginners.
He says organisers are concerned about a decline in the mana and mauri because of the number of cheaply-made carvings being produced overseas for sale here.
“A big part of the korero at the symposium was investigating those things, what is mauri, what is states of being while you are making it and putting heart into stuff, putting love in and quality and the difference in quality,” Mr Ormsby says.
