Ruatoki housing plan about kinship and culture
In Ruatoki on Sunday. The ground will be broken for an innovative housing initiative.
Hine Kūoro Hohua from Ngāti Koura says the intention is to create hapu villages attached to Papakāinga Marae and Te Tōtara Marae.
She says Tūhoe wants to fight back against individualism, loneliness and neglect by investing in their people and their future.
The marae will be at the centre, with homes all around.
“And we would love to see tamariki, mokopuna, their parents, nannies, koros, aunties and uncles bringing these places to life. So this is not a housing project. This is very much about kinship and culture,” Ms Hohua says.
