Sherman earns opportunity TVNZ gallery spot
TVNZ political reporter Maiki Sherman has become the first wahine Māori to be the lead political editor for the national broadcaster.
Ms Sherman takes over from Jessica Mutch McKay, who left for a government relations job at ANZ Bank.
She says the press gallery is there to hold politicians to account, and she will bring her own perspective to the job.
“Having grown up in aan era when we were being told not to be who we are as Māori, that gives you a unique insight and empathy for every kind of marginalized community across Aotearoa, and there are many. That’s where we as journalists step in, and we make sure that those perspectives and that those considerations are at the forefront when big decisions that impact whanau are being made,” Ms Sherman says.
