Treaty clauses must be fine tuned says PM
The Prime Minister is downplaying a decision that future legislation won’t contain general treaty clauses.
Christopher Luxon says clauses will only be included when the law has clear Treaty of Waitangi implications.
He says the treaty is sacrosanct and his Government has no intention of changing it.
“Treaty settlements and obligations past and future and continued settlements are really important to this Government but what we are also sayng very clearly is that we can’t have general treaty provisions hanging in a piece of legislation that causes massive amounts of confusion as to how does it pertain to the specific nature of that specific piece of legislation,” Mr Luxon says.
