Te Pāti Māori co-leader Rawiri Waititi’s bill has presented a petition with almost 20,000 signatures supporting his member’s bill to remove GST from food, which has its first reading this evening.
He says the petition shows people in Aotearoa want to remove the tax from what he says is the human right of access to kai.
Mr Waititi says regressive taxes are particularly unfair on the poor, and scrapping gst will save the average household of four $57 a week.
