Indigenous league offers respite from politics
The spotlight goes on Indigenous sportspeople and their communities this week with the indigenous All Stars games in Townsville on Friday against Aotearoa New Zealand Māori.
Veteran commentator Ken Laban says sports is a great unifier, especially for the rugby league community.
“And from an Aboriginal perspective, of course, they’re coming off what was the comprehensive no vote during the Voice campaign. And it’s an ongoing, ongoing struggle. And having said that, it’s also an ongoing celebration,” he says.
Sky Sport is offering a bilingual commentary team with veteran Māori broadcaster Dale Husband, Rugby World Cup 2023 reo Māori commentator Te Aorere Pēwhairangi and former Kiwi Ferns captain Honey Hireme-Smiler calling the games, which kick off at 7.50pm New Zealand time with the NRL All Stars Women.
