Power grab in anti-Māori policies
Māori lawyer Annette Sykes says politicians Shane Jones and David Seymour need to look in the mirror and ask the person they see whether what they are doing is right.
She says in their attacks on things Māori including the Waitangi Tribunal are doing great disservice to the Māori world.
The Court of Appeal decision supporting the tribunal’s right to summons Children’s Minister Karen Chhour described it as the conscience of a nation.
Ms Sykes says there seems to be no one in the current Government with the moral compass to listen to that conscience.
“Is it about personal power or are they really about undermining they people they are meant to represent without fear or favour and provide laws that are equal for all. They aren’t. They’re trampling on the mana of Maori people and they should be asked to desist from that because that is unreasonable, inappropriate power of those in the executive,” she says.
Ms Sykes says shutting down the Tribunal would be a bad move if the Government wants to keep promoting the line this is a country based on fairness.
