Doco to celebrate Taki Rua achievement
Test screenings have been held for a documentary about the 30-year-history of our unofficial Māori national theatre.
Writer-director Whetu Fala says she’s aiming to have a final edit of Rua – Breaking Barriers done by Matariki, with a cinema release towards the end of the year.
She says the Wellington-based theatre nurtured actors, directors, and writers such as Riwia Brown, Rachel House, Taika Waititi, Jim Morairty and Nancy Brunning.
“It’s just fun to see all these wonderful actors, directors and with their kaumātua up on screen – Keri Kaa, Tūngia Baker, Wi Kuki Kaa, Rona Bailey.. it’s kind of back to the future because many of the things that they speak about in the film, are occurring right now,” Fala says.
