Foon finds Chinese support for tiriti
The New Zealand Chinese Association is standing with Maori against what it says are attacks on the place of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in the founding of Aotearoa-New Zealand as a nation.
Association president, and former Race Relations Commissioner, Meng Foon, says it’s easy for politicians to say all New Zealanders should be equal – after stripping Maori of almost all their lands through war, confiscation, dodgy legislation including the Public Works Act, and other means that have been found to have breached the Treaty many times over.
“Its easy to say, mate, I’ve taken your house – let’s be equal now. No, no that’s a terrible notion. If Maori were in control they would actually be governing and owning at least 80 to 90 percent of the land in New Zealand,” he says.
Meng Foon is heading a delegation of Chinese to Hokianga in the north and also Waitangi – to commemorate and strengthen existing ties between local Maori and his people – as well as express support for Maoridom’s fight against attacks on Te Tiriti.
