Luxon facing 2 WT Claims in one week
Prime Minister Christopher Luxon say he’s taking advice on two Waitangi Tribunal claims filed against the new Government’s plans.
Tauranga’s Ngāi Te Rangi Settlement Trust wants an urgent hearing into whether the Government is breaching the Treaty’s promise to protect te reo Māori by reducing the use of te reo by public service organisations.
And Lady Tureiti Moxon and Janice Kuka are leading a claim by Maori health providers against the scrapping of Te Aka Whaiora – the Māori Health Authority.
Mr Luxon defended his Government’s approach to Māori issues.
“The reality is outcomes under the previous Labour government went backwards on a range of dimensions whether it was Māori with housing, Māori with respect to education, health, Māori as victims of crime, Māori economically, so we are determind to make sure we work on all those elements to improve outcomes for Māori and non-Māori,” he says.
