Wāhine ready to defend treaty
The Māori Women’s Welfare league is calling of members to respond to the Government’s 100 day plan.
National president Hope Tupara says she’s concerned at National’s agreement to support ACT’s Treaty Principles Bill and to the select committee stage.
She says politicians are creating fear and blocking positive constitutional change for all New Zealanders.
“I just heard David Seymour on TV yesterday saying there’s there’s no room for it, it’s not democratic. Well, he’s assuming that. He’s making assumptions about a model without actually talking to te tiriti partners so he’s assuming a whole bunch of things that he actually can’t really talk or be informed about. Because, you know, the basic principle of te tiriti is that you’re talking with your partner,” Dr Tupara says.
She says Māori input on potential constitutional change is necessary under Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
