Cricket draws in Māori players
The first woman and first Māori, to chair New Zealand Cricket – says the organisation deserves recognition for its efforts to encourage Māori and Pasifika participation.
Chartered accountant Diana Puketapu-Lyndon, of Ngāti Porou says the first ever wāhine Maori nationals in Hawke’s Bay last month – and the forthcoming Pacific Cup in Auckland next January – shows just how far Indigenous women have come in cricket.
The tāne Maori tournament in Whangarei at Easter showed similar growth in the men’s game.
“I think New Zealand Cricket is doing really well in that space. And I guess my appointment as chair just serves to demonstrate that we’re still pushing the boundaries if you like – using a cricket term,” she says.
Diana Puketapu-Lyndon also chairs the New Zealand Olympic Committee.
