COMET out to prove its worth

The kaitūhono Māori for education and training organisation Te Hononga Akoranga COMET says its Māori programmes are not at risk from its transition from an Auckland Council organisation to an independent charitable trust.
Mr Meggitt says the trust has received about half a million dollars a year from council, which it used to cover overheads and bring in other money to run its programmes.
With the council looking to cut funding for social services, is seemed a good time to show some confidence in what it was doing.
“If we’re worth what we are worth, then you know, our mahi will come from other avenues and not just controlled by the council,” he says
Mr Meggitt says programmes like the Tamariki Writers’ Group are almost self sustaining, but work on some new programmes has been put on hold until new funding is secured.
