MBIE funds Māori trade study
The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment’s Endeavour Fund is putting $14-point-9-million dollars into research into how matauranga Māori can be applied to trade policy.
Tauhokohoko project head Jason Mika, Waikato University’s Māori dean, says the a five year project will involve Waikato, Massey University, Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi and Māori trade advisory group Te Taumata.
He says Aotearoa is dependent on international trade.
“It’s not just enough to export goods and services now. We need to do so in a way that is good for the environment, acknowledges climate change effects and how we do that but also contributes to the wellbeing of whenua and whanau,”
Dr Mika says.
The project will look at how indigenous knowledge, value and practices can help trade achieve those outcomes.
