Agendas converge for Moroki kaupapa housing project
Iwi partners and Associate Housing Minister Peeni Henare were in Glen Innes yesterday for the opening of the Moroki housing development on Line Rd.
Developer New Ground has handed ownership of the 50 one, two and three bed units to iwi investor partner, Hāpai Housing, which has brought in Taranaki based trust Ka Uruora to manage the rent to buy process and coordinate wraparound services.
Paul Majurey from Ngāti Maru says it’s a kaupapa Māori approach to tackling the housing affordability problem for whānau.
“These are build to renters but the key thing is these are modern, well-designed, warm, dry, healthy homes where our folk have security of tenure for long term rentals and also support in place in terms of equity and whānau being able to save which is an important part of the Ka Uruora programme to be able to purchase these homes in terms of their long term security,” he says.
