Auckland Mission launches national foodbank survey

Auckland City Mission is partnering with similar agencies in other centres to conduct a national survey of foodbank clients.
The survey comes out of research done by its general manager social services, Helen Robinson, for the University of Auckland’s Master of Social and Community Leadership degree.
Ms Robinson says she was moved to enrol after seeing the hundreds queuing for a Christmas food parcel at the Auckland City Mission a couple of years ago, and realising she needed to find out more about food insecurity and wellbeing.
Her survey of Auckland Mission clients found women, Māori and Pasifika bear the burden of food insecurity, with the most food insecure person likely to be a single mother.
On average, people accessing foodbank services in Auckland run out of food at least once a week, with housing costs a major contributor to the gap between income and expenditure.
She says food insecurity reduces wellbeing including psychological wellbeing because people are worrying about whether they can put food on the table.
